Freihofer's Run for Women Launches 10-Week Training Challenge Program
Based Around Couch to 5K Training Plan, Initiative Encourages FRW Participants to Get In Shape with Media Celebrities Kelly Lynch, Ann Hughes and Jennifer Gish
ALBANY, NY (March 11, 2011) — With just over three months until the 33rd annual Freihofer's Run for Women (Saturday, June 4 at 10 a.m.) in Albany, New York, race officials today unveiled a new 10-week program designed to help Freihofer's 5K participants get into the best possible running shape.
The initiative, known as the Freihofer's Training Challenge (http://www.freihofersrun.com/fc25k.htm), will utilize the popular Couch to 5K Training Plan (http://bit.ly/mRX6), a program that teaches novice runners how to complete three miles gradually over eight weeks.
Through the Training Challenge, which kicks off Monday, March 28, participants first register for the event and then join one of three teams led by media personalities: Kelly Lynch (WGY-810 AM), Ann Hughes (FOX23), or Jennifer Gish (Times Union).
Training Challenge participants will then join their media personality and teammates in this fun training program, complete with certified trainer. They will spend one day a week walking/jogging/running with their team leader at The Crossings of Colonie (http://www.colonie.org/parks/crossings/), another working out at a time that works best for them, and then reconvene at The Crossings Saturday mornings at 9 a.m. with their team members for a group session.
"The purpose of the Training Challenge is to help first time runners get into shape and experience the excitement of competing in the Freihofer's Run for Women," said longtime Event Director George Regan, noting that the Run for Women is the only 5K road race in the U.S. to hold the "silver" label designation by the International Association of Athletics Federations, the sport’s worldwide governing body. "Road racing is the only sport where the recreational runner has the ability to participate in the same event as Olympians and World Champions."
Those taking part in the Training Challenge will receive a Freihofer's Run for Women Training Challenge t-shirt, enjoy VIP treatment race day, receive nutritious Freihofer's products, and help their team hoist the inaugural Freihofer's Training Challenge trophy!
