Elite Race Walkers Ready for 10K Race Walk Championships at 32nd Annual Freihofer's Run for Women

Events to Include Race Walk Championships, Free Sports Clinic and 22nd Annual Freihofer's Community Walk

ALBANY, NY (June 1, 2010) — To most people, there are runners and then there are walkers. But race walkers?

The name may sound contradictory, but race walking is a national past time and boasts tens of thousands of serious participants around the world, many of whom can walk — or rather, race walk — faster than most of us can run.

On June 5, 2010, a number of world-class race walkers will converge on the Empire State Plaza for the USA 10K Race Walk Championship, taking place during the Freihofer's Run for Women weekend. The event kicks off at 7:30 a.m. Saturday with the USA Open and Junior National 10K Race Walk Championships, followed by a free SportWalk Clinic at 11:30 a.m., which the public is invited to attend. Participants can then apply what they've learned at the 3K Community Walk taking place at 12:30 p.m.

Race Director Don Lawrence is excited about the growing interest in the sport. Having competed in three Olympic trials, Lawrence conducts weekly clinics for the Fleet Feet Sport Walkers at Fleet Feet Sports in Albany, NY.

"Race walking is a unique sport in that technique is such a big part of the competition," Lawrence said. "Athletes are subjected to disqualification if three warnings are given for either of two rules."

The rules require athletes to have one foot on the ground at all times, as well as a straightened knee at heel contact through the vertical position.

According to Lawrence, "This makes for the awkward but graceful gait that moves the elite under a seven minute mile average pace."

The competition this year is expected to be tight. There are three Olympians in contention including two-time defending champion Teresa Vaill, of Florida. Originally from Pine Plains, NY, Vaill is the 2008 Olympic Trials runner-up, four-time USA Outdoor champion ('04, '05, '07, '09), 2004 Olympian, seven-time USA Indoor champions ('84-'86, '89-'91, '08), and three-time U.S. women's 10K RW champion.

Another elite is Erin Taylor-Talcott, of Johnson City, NY. Taylor-Talcott is the 2010 USA 50K Race Walk Champion and Indoor 3K masters winner. Taylor-Talcott will speak at the Race Walk clinic on Friday, June 4th at 7 p.m. at the CapitalCare Health & Fitness Expo.

USA National Race Walk team members and Olympic trials competitors, Dave and Loretta McGovern of Long Island, are entered and will conduct the SportWalk Clinic at 11:30 a.m. prior to the 22nd Annual Freihofer's Community Walk at 12:30 p.m. Dave McGovern is one of America's most experienced race walking and marathon walking coaches and clinicians.

In addition, Marcel Jobin, 67, of Quebec, will be competing as well. Jobin is a1984 Canadian Olympian and 2010 World Masters Indoor Champion.
